Creeping Jenny (Lysimachia nummularia) is a low-growing, fast-spreading aquatic or semi-aquatic perennial plant often used in gardens, ponds, and water features.

Description:

  • Growth Habit: Creeping Jenny is a trailing plant that spreads quickly along the ground or over the edges of containers and ponds. It forms a dense mat of foliage, making it ideal for ground cover or softening the edges of water features.

  • Leaves: The plant has small, round, bright green to golden-yellow leaves (especially in the cultivar ‘Aurea’), which grow opposite each other along the stems.

  • Flowers: It produces small, cup-shaped yellow flowers in late spring to early summer. The flowers are about 1–2 cm (0.4–0.8 in) across and have five petals.

  • Water Tolerance: Creeping Jenny thrives in moist to wet soil and can even grow partially submerged along pond margins. It tolerates a variety of conditions, from full sun to partial shade.

  • Uses:

    • Excellent for pond edges, bog gardens, and containers.

    • Often used for erosion control due to its fast-spreading habit.

    • Can also be used as a terrestrial groundcover in moist garden beds.

  • Maintenance:

    • Easy to grow but can become invasive if not controlled.

    • Prune back regularly to prevent overgrowth.
