Cholla Cactus Flower

• Appearance: The flowers are typically cup-shaped and grow at the ends of the cactus joints. They range in color from bright yellow to greenish-yellow, orange, red, or even deep magenta, depending on the species.

• Blooming Season: Most Cholla species bloom in late spring to early summer (April to June), often after the seasonal rains.

• Pollinators: The flowers are pollinated by bees and other insects, attracted by their vibrant colors and nectar.

• Growth Habit: The Cholla cactus itself can vary in height from low-growing ground covers to tree-like forms (like the Teddy Bear Cholla or Chain Fruit Cholla). Flowers often give way to fruit, which may be dry or fleshy, and sometimes have spines as well.

• Special Note: Despite their beauty, Cholla cacti are notorious for their barbed spines, which can easily attach to skin or clothing and are difficult to remove. Some species are called “jumping cholla” because their segments detach easily, giving the illusion of jumping onto passersby.
